Working on SharePoint
Today, SharePoint was supposed to be ready with a full virtual server setup, Think again!
Our vendor forgot one little detail of the setup "Security" so now they will have to break it and rebuild again which might take another 5 days before its ready for me again.
Just another day in IT for me.
CHEERS!

RM upgrade

We are now getting ready to upgrade our Property Management system so let me explain something about the world of computer systems;
- No system is perfect, as a matter of fact, all software have tons of bugs.
- No individual is perfect, as a matter of fact, I am sure you remember your last mistake.
- No timeline is accurate, see 1 & 2 - but it is not all bad since we can estimate now.
- No third software development team is perfect, where are they when you need them.
- No end-user understands your IT goal.
I listed these 5 to say that if you are upgrading any company software for your business. Always, and I mean always prepare for the worse yet hope for the best, do not sweat the little things and smile no matter what.
Give your users the sense of confidence but keep it real, right expectation will come a long way.
I've gone through several of these now and I will say they are all different no matter how similar you think they are, "SMILE" and don't be too hard on yourself for mistakes.
MOJO OUT!

Summer IT days!
Typical IT Engineering and Support summer is usually busy but we are able to stay focus on major projects for our Company.
This year we are seeing more pesty social networks viruses coming to life, I believe social networks are great and needed in these fast times, bringing individuals together through fast communications as someone said to me "we always feel like we have to be doing something".
How many times have you been stopped on a red light waiting and felt you had to pull your phone, in most cases your Blackberry or some kind of smart phone; read email, check twitter or even browse the Internet? What happen to jamming to a song on the radio then again what is Radio? We all have IPOD now and "it's a small HD world after all".
Well, I do agree that we now have great Technologies and in our case the are great for marketing but all great things come with a price so the question is "The price Right"?.
I am out for now, I need to start updating this IT blog more with the goal in mind to create better educational tools for my clients, staff, students.
For now I need to get back and focus on our Remote user backup project and Email archive project.
I am mojo out! Derek

IT Projects in progress

One of our biggest projects for this summer is the upgrade of Timberline. We are proud to say that Campus Advantage IT follows best practices on their SDLC(software Development Life Cycles), I am sure you hate IT acronyms but we love them!
Well, Matt is doing a great job and has now setup a "best practices" test network and after almost putting a hammer to the newly build test servers has installed SQL(name of database system).
Next time you talk to Matt, tell him how much SQL rocks which I am sure he will appreciate these comments.
Seriously, I feel Matt's pain but here are 3 words for Matt "HOOK 'EM HORNS"
Cheers!

The love for Technology

Word on the street is that Google is creating better technologies than Microsoft, could this be truth? and Why?
Simple answer - Cost for development
Microsoft has the high-end development team with great technologies such as Share Point but at a cost of $10 per license per user for Enterprise.
Google on the other hand has collaboration Apps for a fraction of the cost, ready for prime time and shareable on the Web - http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en-GB/business/collaboration.html
Some of you might ask why is that the businesses do not migrate to open source or solutions like Google, the answer is that Microsoft is like a drug and we are addicted and can't find a way to quit.
For us addition recovery requires IT guys to show all of us that there is way out of this costly addition affecting our business.
